Well, almost always. Sometimes it gets even MORE confusing :)
The story itself is actually pretty straightforward... the problem is that it doesn't really make sense in the context of the DCU, especially after Countdown and Death of the New Gods (which also didn't really fit well with each other, but anyway...)
Now, I'm not a slave to continuity, but given that we sat through 52 weeks of setup for this story, it's not unreasonable to expect it to be relevant. ;) Bizarrely, the story that's most relevant to FC is actually Seven Soldiers: Mister Miracle, which was probably the least relevant series in the 7S project.
Taken on it's own merits, independent of all the Crises, minis, and weeklies of the past few years, it's not a bad story at all. The only really confusing bit is the fellow on the last page, and that confusion may be on purpose (as he's confused himself).
I do wonder if (red-headed) Anthro is connected to (red-headed) Aurakles...
